CH'AN BUDDHISM: The Chinese term for ZEN BUDDHISM, which emphasizes meditation as a means of achieving enligthenment. Ch'an Buddhism was introduced to CHINA in the sixth century by BODHIDHARMA. He also introduced several basic exercises that formed the basis of KUNG-FU, and Ch'an Buddhism can claim to be a major spiritual influence on the Chinese and, by extension, the Japanese martial arts.
